Introduction

The Courmayeur Foundation was established pursuant to Regional Law n.18 of 19th April 1988. Its main objective is to promote, in the Aosta Valley, projects, research, studies and cultural initiatives concerning relations between law and economics, taking account of the ever increasing international and European dimension in Italian society.

The Foundation, based in Courmayeur, was created following an agreement between the Aosta Valley Region, the Municipality of Courmayeur, CNPDS (National Centre for Prevention and Social Defence) in Milan and Censis (Centre for Social Studies and Policies) in Rome.

The “Laurent Ferretti” Mountain Observatory was founded in 1994 as an integral part of the Foundation, with the following aims: to promote an exchange of ideas concerning the mountains using the contribution of qualified partners; to develop a multi-disciplinary research project with an international focus; and to distribute efficiently the results of the research.
